7 Favorite Room Makeovers of 2021!!

DIY PROJECT

The 5 Hour Playroom Makeover

Let’s start this celebration off with my most recent makeover because it’s the freshest in my mind. This 5-hour playroom makeover was extra special because it was a gift to our dear friends and their 4 kids. Seeing their reaction to the room was the absolute best feeling. Plus, we really enjoyed the timeframe challenge! It reminded me that Mr. Yolo and I have a pretty wonderful skillset, and getting to share it with people is a true gift. Also, I’m still in love with the layered rugs in this space. I got a lot of questions about the bottom one, find it HERE!

The Loft Banquette

This is DIY fluted Banquette is one of the first projects that Mr. Yolo and I designed and executed together in our new Loft renovation. The style of this house had me so stumped, way more modern than our other houses. Mr. Yolo and I both brought ideas to the table (no pun intended) and designed a corner that would look beautiful and function. It completely set the tone for the rest of the house, and gave me some much needed confidence to continue designing the other rooms. I loved using new materials and bringing this corner some warmth.

The DIY Workshop

The garage at the Loft House we purchased this year was a major bonus — especially because it wasn’t even on the listing! As soon as I saw it I knew it would be a perfect workshop. All it needed was a coat of white paint and it transformed into vintage storage and a space to create. The timing was perfect, and we finished the space just before filming our Handmade Home Workshop for the Magnolia Network (a big accomplishment of 2021)!

Vintage Camp Playroom

This attic space was one of the looongest room makeovers we have ever done… I think it took 6 or 7 months? We slowly chipped away at it in between projects at other houses. I was so thankful that you all stuck with me for the whole ride. Little Yolo was a vocal client, but we ended up with something she absolutely loved. The best part of this makeover was working with so many amazing women entrepreneurs while searching for vintage camp goodies. I had fun during the process, but was beyond happy when it was done, and now we get to play!

The Ship Room

Coming up with a solution for that tiny, randomly placed window at the Charcoal Bungalow was a real design dilemma, but in the end the ship gallery wall was a fun solution. The fact that I gathered WAY too much art for this tiny room is another story, ha! I still gravitate toward ship art when I’m at Goodwill, it’s hard to break the habit.

My Little Sister’s Vintage Guest Room

I did a weekend makeover in my little Sister’s blank guest bedroom. This room is one of my favorites because I remember walking into an antique store and picking out all sorts of random items like the printed lamps, mirror, wicker fan, blanket…with a loose game plan of the design. Seeing it all come together in the room was such a cool feeling. I loved that the room felt so welcoming, and absolutely unique!

Kitchen Cabinet Makeover at My Little Sister’s Rental

I saved my favorite, and the hands-down most popular post of the year, for last! We tackled my little Sister’s rental kitchen in a week and it looks better than I could have imagined!! It was my first time painting cabinets, and I was totally blown away at the transformation. We salvaged so many things from this kitchen, like the cabinet doors, handles, light fixture…and just gave them a new life. This kitchen “Before & After” is the reason I love DIY so much!

And there you have it! Which was your favorite makeover of 2021?! I can’t wait to show you more of what we’ve been dreaming up for next year.
