The Loft Renovation Exterior | Help pick a paint color!

DIY PROJECT, Room Makeovers

I am sharing the exterior of the Loft House Renovation today! It’s certainly interesting, right?! Before we bought this place, I would always look at this house from our Duplex rental across the street and wonder what it’s story was. When it came on the market and we saw the inside, it was clear there was so much potential. We knew it just needed a little love…and a lot of paint. Now I need your help, what color should I paint the exterior?!?!

The Idea Home

Let’s rewind a little… you might remember that after we bought the house, we found out that it was called “Milwaukee’s Idea Home”. It was design by UW Milwaukee engineering students as a prototype for a sustainable home. The home was made of 12 precast concrete walls that were poured in Browntown and then transported to the Walker’s Point neighborhood in Milwaukee. How unique is that?!

Curb Appeal

Now, onto the color mockups! First, the front door. You know that unique door paint is almost my signature at this point, i.e. The Sage Home and The Blue Door Duplex. I played around with a lot of different colors, but ultimately decided it needed to be wood in order to warm up the concrete exterior. The nice advantage of a wood door is that it will work well with any exterior color! Also, I’m feeling confident that all the trim should go black and cover up the beige. Now the color options!

Olive
Dark Blue/Green
Light Blue
Dusty Pink
Evergreen

Note: These are not the actual names of the colors, just trying to pick a direction and then I’ll start sampling.

Let me know your paint color vote in the comments! Have a different idea? Let me know that, too!

Evergreen is my choice, but I have to say all the colors look great. I didn’t think it would be so hard to pick one. Good luck.

  3. I love the dark colors and the natural door! I vote for the Dark Blue/Green

  4. Cassandra says:

    Dark Blue / Green!

  5. S says:

    Dark blue/green
Is my top choice. The only one I don’t love is the dark green. If it was more of an olive …

  6. Cori Doron says:

I like the first color but i also think a dark steel grey blue would be great. A dark grey with just a hint of blue

  7. Sally says:

That’s a tough pick, but I think Evergreen is my top choice.

  8. Anonymous says:

The one called Light Blue — it looks sagey which I love.

    Olive

  13. Ansley Murray says:

My vote is the dusty pink or the evergreen!

Both quirky and inviting. The pink would tie in with those gorgeous Turkish pillows and the green also is carried throughout the loft too.

  14. Jenny says:

    Dark blue/green

    Definitely Olive!

  16. Jacey says:

    Dusty Pink!

  17. Anonymous says:

I’m not even a pink person, but I’m digging the feel of the dusty pink. It is warm and inviting.

  18. Milo says:

Evergreen (fresh and modern) or light blue (timeless classic). So cool that it was the Idea Home!

  19. Christy says:

Evergreen is beautiful! Can’t wait to see the transformation!

  20. Anonymous says:

I love all of them!!!! You are so talented I love following along 🙂 I’m a local Wisconsinite 😊

  21. Mary says:

Evergreen or Dark-blue green but landscaping will be tricky with those colors. The green shrubs look so blah with the dark greens.
    Have you considered Egg Plant?

  22. Anonymous says:

Not a bad choice in the bunch, but loving the olive!

  23. Jill says:

Of your mock-ups, I like the dusty pink which reads as a dusty brick. Alternatively, I’d love to see a warm medium-dark gray. I love all the green hues yet with landscaping, it can be a lot of green and you don’t get credit for your foliage.
Thanks for letting us chime in! Whatever you decide will look great.

  24. Jenn says:

Either Evergreen or Dark Blue/Green. I like the dust pink and light blue but feel like the exterior is missing something with those lighter shades.

  25. Ann Justice says:

    Evergreen my fav!

  26. Lindsay says:

    Dusty Pink!

  27. Anonymous says:

Olive. with shorter shrubs and some ornamental grasses.

The wood door is a great choice to warm up the exterior! As for color, I love the dark blue/green! I also think that the dusty pink would look wonderful, as well.

  29. Katie says:

Every color is fun but I’m drawn to the dark blue/green. I think it pops the most.

  30. Anonymous says:

    Dark blue/green

  31. Hannah Stephenson says:

I love the middle three! Dark blue/green, light blue, or dusty pink. Leaning towards the blues. Love the black trim and wood door!

    Olive

  39. Kierstin says:

Love the Evergreen and the funky undertones of the Olive. I painted my house “Forestwood” by with “Greenblack“ for the trim (both SW) and I love them! The wood door will look amazing with any color!!

  40. Debi says:

    1. Olive

Dark blue green is my fav. They are all winner colors, though.

  46. Kaitlyn says:

    Dark blue/green or Evergreen!

  47. Cindy says:

I love the Evergreen. Dusty pink would be second choice and I’m not even a pink person but it seem to look pretty good on this house.

  48. Melissa says:

    Olive or light blue!

  49. Momo says:

    Olive!

  50. Janet in Kansas City says:

    Olive!

  51. Hollie says:

Dark blue green is my first pick! But dusty rose a close second.

  52. Lauren says:

Dark blue/ green or dusty pink!

  53. Cindy Bunker says:

    Dark blue green

  54. Chelsie says:

    Olive!

  55. Stephanie says:

I’m drawn to the dark blue/green and evergreen colors, they feel moody modern and make the wood door stand out. The light blue and dusty pink don’t feel like the fit the style of this house.

  56. Judy says:

Dark Barn red. (Tending toward rusty pink)

  57. Judy says:

Dark Barn red. (Tending toward a dark rusty colour)

  58. Elayne says:

Olive or navy. When you picked these colors do the color of the nearby house influence your choice? You’re so good with color I don’t think you can go wrong.

  59. Morgan Bratton says:

    Dark blue/green!

  60. Chris says:

Dark blue/green was so striking! It will impact your landscaping choices though.

  61. Taylor T says:

Why is this so hard to choose a preference??

I like the dark blue/green or evergreen the BEST. But olive is very close second!

  62. Noelle Zempel says:

I love the contrast the Olive allows. So pretty!

  63. Maiden in a modern World says:

Dark blue/green or olive 1,000 percent. I think either one is stunning, whereas the others are all just- okay.

  64. Maria says:

The Evergreen is forever and says sustainable.

  65. Maria says:

Evergreen is timeless and says sustainable

  66. Tammy Pope says:

    Evergreen or dark blue/green.

  67. Luciluciol says:

I love the dark blue, but if it is too Sunny, will tour housse stay cool inside ? Dusty pink IS m’y second choice !

  68. Luciluciol says:

Ouch, *if it is too sunny, will your house stay cool inside ? Dusty pink is my second choice
The french phone’s corrector makes it awful, sorry for your eyes !

  69. Bonnie says:

From these picks, I’d go blue/green, but I wonder if a blue/grey would look best? I’d love to see that choice.

  70. Liz says:

    Dark blue/green looks great!

  71. Pam Petrescu says:

Dusty Pink. All the other colors seem too dark and make the house look ominous. Also, looking at the surrounding colors of the buildings, the Dusty Pink (which appears to be a more Rusty Pink, which I hope it is)seems to fit right in.

  72. David says:

    Light blue or dusty pink!

  73. Jan says:

    Olive would look great!

  74. Shelby says:

Dark blue/green!! It’s so different & perfect for a more modern house 😍

  75. Jen says:

Olive. Delicious like in a cocktail!

  76. Susie Morton says:

    Dark blue-green!

  77. Han says:

Olive or dusky pink for sure. They are interesting but blend in at the same time. The others are too dark and therefore uninviting

  78. Sharon says:

I like any of the darker colors, Evergreen being my first choice. I think those work well with black trim. However, I once had a home with dark grey paint and it chalked badly under the porches, so I’d check that out before going that direction. (We probably didn’t know how to take care of it properly, but who wants unneeded work:)) You would also need to be careful with landscaping, as others have noted, so it doesn’t get lost, if you go dark. Love your style, it will look great whatever you do!

  79. Megan says:

Dusty Pink! It’s so unique!! Blue/Green is a very close second though.

  80. GingerR says:

    Dusty pink or blue.
I’d like to see a mock up where the upper window shades are the same, I found that distracting, and where the window next to the front door has a strip of the main house color down the right side. With the black trim I feel like that first floor right-side window is a black hole, and maybe some other color, like the main house color would improve it.

  81. Adrianne says:

I love all the colors but something seems not proportional! Maybe add a horizontal board above the windows and choose a different but complementary color? Two tone would be great! Or use cedar shingles on the top part?
