Barnhouse | Summer Camp Guest Room

Before & After

This was a fun one! I spotted this Plaid Fringe Area Rug from Better Homes & Gardens, which got my wheels turning, and kicked-off the idea to turn the guest room at the Barnhouse into a Summer Camp getaway! This isn’t our first camp space in this home, check out our daughter’s playroom. So I typed “Plaid” in the search bar and added a bunch of BHG bedding to my shopping cart. The plan was to play around with mixing prints. Then, I spotted this cute Desk Lamp and decided to add to pops of red. Next up was to have some fun with the styling…bowl of vintage softballs?? Sure! And I must say, when I ordered everything, I questioned if it would all work…I was stoked when it started to come together! So let’s talk details.

Camp Bedding

I really went for it with the patterns on the bed, and as I started layering, I was loving the look. One thing that helped was the Reversible Buffalo Plaid Quilt. The buffalo plaid felt too heavy, so I used the window pane side, and then layered on a neutral tan blanket to break up the pattern. Then, I added another vintage plaid blanket, which brought in the pop of color. I played with two vintage blankets, and picked this one with a smaller plaid print because I wanted different pattern scale on the soft goods so they would not complete. I made a special trip to my storage for this handmade pillow, because I knew it would tie everything together perfectly!

Once the bedding was set, it was time to play with the styling! I picked out a bunch of random thrifted items, and just tried different combinations. As I styled, I kept thinking about how I wanted it to feel like a summer sleep-away camp. So I taped some bird posters up, brought in these cool vintage softballs, and it started to come together. The metal 3 signs came from a local flea market last Summer. They work so well with the camp vibe and add another pop of red to call back to the lamp.

Going with red, green, and plaid was a risk but it definitely works for more than just the holidays. I love that simple decor items like the birds on the wall made it campy. It’s cool to see how small details can really change the entire vibe. Switch out the birds for a wreath, and the softballs for pinecones, and I am ready for Christmas!

Now, who wants to come stay at Camp Yolo?!
