This week is a crazy one, I have been working on a video shoot in Brooklyn for the last three days with Refinery29, (14 hours days in heels, eeeek! Foot massage please?). The project is super fun and colorful (more on ispydiy snapchat), and I can’t wait to show you the finals! In the meantime, I had to share how my DIY mudcloth print chair turned out. As I mentioned yesterday, creating the traditional fabric is an involved process, so I decided to take a $3 director’s chair that I thrifted, and try using a bleach pen to create a pattern on the canvas. I started by removing the seat/back from the chair and dying them with permanent black fabric dye, once it’s dried I drew on the pattern using a bleach pen. I love how it turned out and am going to try out the technique on some pillows next…perfect for my apt! Steps after the break…

What you need:
Canvas material
Bleach pen

What to do:
Plot out your pattern on the material by marking with pencil or freehand it (like I did!)
Trace your pattern with a bleach pen.
Let sit overnight.
When dry, wash off the excess bleach to reveal your pattern. Done!

It looks so gorgeous, Jenni! It’s impressive how even if you stick to black and white, you manage to make gorgeous projects! Also, that log side-table? WOW. Simply stunning! Did you purchase it that way or did you wax/prep it? If so, mind sharing how? I’m always a bit scared of bringing logs home because of termites and bugs…

Keep up the spirit! Have a great day! 🙂

  4. I have always turned a blind eye when it came to DIY’s involving bleach, but this one is a winner! Absolutely love the patterns

  6. I just love that trunk side table! I saw a coffee table like that once, with a round glass top. I totally should have bought it. But it was so heavy!!!

I think I have the EXACT same chair! I made new covers for it and printed on it with lino stamps a few years ago. I’m loving the bleach pen technique that you’ve done! Definitely going to give this a try!

Wow this is such a great idea!!! I love the idea of just using a bleach pen instead of white paint…I would not have thought of that! Also I love the custom wall hangings!!! They are so cool!
