Hey All! I have been bopping around from state to state for conferences, meetings and events for the last few weeks (follow along on ispydiy snapchat), and more then once I’ve been asked, “How do you pack everything for a week trip in a carry-on?” So, I thought I would share a few tips and tricks with you all on how to #travellight. I never ever like to check a bag because I am always afraid of it not making it to my final destination, and I am way too impatient to wait after my flight lands. Plus, the cost adds up when you fly a lot! So, I make sure to follow a few rules every time I take a longer trip with minimal baggage:

  • Stick to a color palette: Make sure everything you pack is in the same color family so that you’ll be able to create a lot of different outfits while only traveling with a few items. I wear a lot of black and white, which is easily interchangeable, then I add in a few pops of color to give my outfits a little flare.
  • Terminal fashion: While en route to your destination, wear an outfit that is comfortable, but can also be worn once you get to your final destination. I always stick to a pair of black denim jeans with a lot of stretch (nothing constricting for the plane) with a comfortable top and leather jacket. That way you can just do a quick change into a blouse and head right to your first meeting, or mix in the jeans and jacket into new outfits. Plus, it’s an look that will definetly land you on the pages of the Best Dressed: Airport Edition.
  • Practice makes perfect: Pack outfits that you’ve worn before and know that work well together so that you don’t end up packing unnecessary items or waste time trying to find what to wear.
  • Dress to impress: My biggest secret it packing a bunch of dresses. They are an entire outfit in one, don’t take up space, and can be casual with a jacket and sneakers, or dressed up with heels. But don’t forget to bring a couple pair of tights for when Mother Nature misses the memo.
  • Best foot forward: Your carry-on is a valuable piece of real estate, so while you’re traveling wear your bulkiest shoes so that they won’t take up space in your bag, a pair of black ankle booties can be worn with everything and are easy to slip off during security. Pack a pair of strappy sandal heels that don’t take up a lot of space and can dress up any outfit, and pair of stylish sneakers are a must for any walking situations.
  • Accessorize: You’re now able to waltz through security with all your jewelry on, so I load on all of my fave pieces before heading to the airport and wear them throughout the trip. Pack a few statement pieces to spice up your outfits, but keep them in your purse in case you have to gate-check your carryon.
  • Keep Valuables Close: Speaking of gate-checking, if you are flying in a small plane, it’s inevitable, so make sure your valuables can fit in your personal item bag. I push the limits with this a bit, and pack a larger tote with my laptop, camera, toiletries, jewelry…anything that I would be devastated to lose.
  • First class travel item: Oversized pair of noise-cancelling headphones are a must for blocking out all the surround sound on your flight, plus you can watch your snapchat in peace.
  • Pro crafter tip: Sometime I go through security with items I know will get flagged but are fine bring on a flight. For example, on the way to crafting event I had 14 pairs of pliers with me, so I allowed a little extra time before the flight and put them in an easily accessible place so TSA could give them the ok, and I could carry on with out checking a bag!
