ASK THE EXPERT | Bouffant Side Pony Tail

Ask the expert, DIY PROJECT
Growing up, I was always experimenting with my hair. I’ve dyed it every color, had it every length and tried every style. My super rad Mom always let me express myself however I wanted through my hair, knowing it will always grow back.  When TRESemmé asked me to dig through my old albums to recreate some of my Mom’s style’s with a modern twist, I immediately said YES!
Flipping through photos, I learned where I got my love for reinventing my look. My Mom had every style possible, so I picked three from her long hair days to reinvent! First up, a perfectly coiffed bouffant flip from the first family picture with my big sis. TRESemmé stylist, Tyler Laswell, showed me how to get the look, and update the flip with a wavy pony. Steps after the break!

What you need:
Curling Iron
Boar Bristle Brush
Comb
Clear Elastic Hair Ties
Bobby Pins
Platinum Strength Heat Spray

Get the look:
1.  Prep hair for curling by misting on  Platinum Strength Heat Spray, which will protect your hair from any breakage and dryness – all common damaging effects from heat styling. Rough dry your hair with fingers after misting or use a blowdryer for a quick shot of air.
2. Curl hair in 1 inch sections all around your head with an appropriate sized curling iron for the length of the hair while spraying each section with Thermal Creations Curl Activator Spray to define ringlets and curls.
TIP: If you do not have a wand, do not open the iron clamp, just wrap the hair around the iron holding onto the ends.
3. Using a boar bristle brush, brush out the curls to soften and loosen the waves.
4. Using a fine tooth comb, part the front half of your head on the side, smoothing the sectioned hair to the side.
5. Take multiple 3-inch sections on top of your head and the back and tease your hair using the fine tooth comb. Be sure to spray hairspray to hold this teased volumewith TRES Two Extra Hold Hair Spray – it’s light on the mist but has incredible, flexible hold. Using the boar bristle brush, lightly brush all teased sections back while smoothing the top.
6. Pull all the hair except for the smooth front section of the hair to a side ponytail and secure with an elastic.
7. Using the front section, wrap remaining hair around the ponytail to cover the elastic. Secure with bobby pins and spray with the TRES Two hairspray to secure hold.
8. For that extra oomph, using the fine toothed comb, gently lift up the teased section of the hair to desired “bump” height.
BONUS DIY: Wear a brooch to up the vintage factor, or clip onto an elastic and add to your pony to embellish the look!
