I SPY DIY BEFORE & AFTER RENOVATION HOME TOUR!

Before & After, DIY PROJECT, Home DIY

Ispydiyabode4
This Summer, Apartment Therapy came to do a video shoot at my home (check out the story HERE! and the Video Tour HERE) so I wanted to get every nook and cranny of the house looking it’s best! I made a giant list, and finished all those little things I vowed to do “someday”. For those that are new around here, I “flipped” this house a few Summers ago for a pilot on HGTV. I bought this rundown 125-year-old mess for $24,000 and we fully gutted and rebuild in 4 months. I fell in love with the house, so decided to keep it, and have been making it my own with DIY projects! Since it was looking all shiny for the video shoot, I snapped pics of every room to share with you all in one place with credits and shopping links to the items still available. Welcome to I Spy Abode, hope you like the transformation!

KITCHEN & DINING AREA The kitchen started off as the grossest place in the house…think cockroaches and electrical fires….Once we got it all cleaned out, the design gave me all sorts of headaches, the sloped ceiling made upper cabinets difficult and I kept moving around the fridge because I did not want it to be a focal point. In the end, I got rid of all the uppers for more windows on the back wall, then added open-concept shelving, with a bunch of lower cabinets and a pantry around the fridge for storage. I am so happy with the final look, it’s such a beautiful view from the front to the back of the house. I originally designed the kitchen to have butcher block countertops, but my cabinet guy got me a deal on this snowy quartz, which meant a lot of white in the kitchen. To warm it up, I added wood cutting boards, and the raw wood shelves that I love styling with my vintage finds. We opened up the wall between the dining room and kitchen to create an open concept space, letting you see the kitchen from everywhere on the lower level.  The modern fixtures and DIY dining table made with the reclaim wood beams from the house, mixed with the warmth of a rug and organic vase create an inviting dining space where I have potluck dinner with friends! Check out more details & photos in the kitchen before & after post here.

CRAFT ROOM: This room off the dining room has sliding barndoors that open up to the craft room! This is a space were I can store all my supplies and great creative, then slide the doors shut and hide the mess, ha! I love the cork board wall for hanging all my inspiration and creating moodboards for the next space I am designing.

LIVING ROOM & ENTRYWAY: The living room and entryway started out full of wood paneling and dingy carpet which needed to go immediately. We were able to get rid of the drop ceilings (yes plural ceilings) and raise them to 10+ft which makes the room seem so much bigger. Since there was no character to preserve in the house, I wanted to have a built in on the wall to add some interest. The floor-to-ceiling custom shelving unit displays my favorite tchotchkes. Since I used a lot of white, I really used the decor items to bring in the warmth and character to each room. I have always loved thrifting, so adding those unique pieces throughout makes it feel very much like my home. Check out more details and photos in the living room before & after post here and a livingroom update here!

DOWNSTAIRS BATHROOM: I picked out this sink before I had a space for it and it found the perfect home in the downstairs bathroom, it’s the coolest, right?!  I originally wanted to use a bold tile design, but because of time and cost, I ended up using more traditional subway tile and hexagons, then brought in a bold design with removable wallpaper and DIY board and batten walls. The $7 thrifted hexagon mirror mimic the floor tile perfectly while the wood brings warmth to the room. Read about all the guest bathroom makeover here.

MASTER BATHROOM & OFFICE SPACE: You will not find a lot of houses this size having a bedroom this big! I went a little overboard, but I like my room to be a place I can retreat to at the end of the day. This space was originally two rooms, but after demo, I reconfigured to forgo a walk-in closet to maximize the space. Instead, I went with big his & hers closets which, as a bonus, acts as a sound buffer between the bedrooms.  Then I made the nook into a little workspace for late night photo editing and blogging. I wanted the room to be an oasis, so I stayed with a black and white color palette with a few pops of color and pattern. The art above my bed is by my favorite photographer Amy Carroll, I have her art all over my home, I love that it feels like Wisconsin, but with a modern twist. Read about all the details on how this master bedroom oasis came to be here.

UPSTAIRS BATHROOM:
When we reconfigured the upstairs, I decided to create a landing and have the bathroom open to both the bedrooms instead of making an en suite for the master bedroom. The plan for the space was black & white with pops of gold and greenery. Our tile budget was tight, so instead of more statement patterned tile,  I picked a classic oversized subway tile and laid out in a crosshatch pattern with a dark grout for a graphic impact. The clawfoot tub was a splurge, but what else can cure the Wisconsin mid-winter chill? I originally wanted a double vanity, but we ended up carving out a corner of the bathroom so the washer and dryer could be on the second floor. Even though we lost a few feet in the bathroom, everyone who saw the house loved the second floor laundry (behind the “no admittance” door. See more details in the blog post here and updated bathroom here!

GUEST ROOM: This cozy, woodsy guest room acted as a guinea pig for my DIY wall treatment ventures in this house. I constructed the board and batten wall after a shiplap fail and love how it turned out especially painted this beautiful shade of green, HostaLeaf. Check out the tutorial for the board and batten DIY here. I love how this DIY barnwood picture ledge acts as a platform for me to experiment with styling my favorite items as my taste and the seasons change. Read all about the DIY picture ledge here.

BACKYARD: This backyard was my biggest DIY undertaking, and whew it was exhausting. My family pitched in and we leveled and sodded the yard. My house is almost touching the houses on both sides of it, so I put up a privacy screen and fence around the backyard to create a little oasis in the city, after we stained the fence and deck in was time to decorate! I wanted a big couch for everyone to hang out on, so combined two to create this sectional. Every Friday in the summer, the park down the street plays live jazz, and me, Griff and friends sit on the backyard couch, BBQ and sip wine. See the full reveal in the blog post here.

The exterior of the house got an upgrade with a metal roof, vinyl board and batten siding and covering the old porch in cedar. I just love that I was able to take the eyesore on the street and turn it into a cute little home with curb appeal!

    Awesome! Nice job!

Tell me about the cabinets you put in! I’m looking at getting mine changed to white like yours (or like the white ones here: https://www.nhance.com/lowcountry/).

    I love it!

  12. Karen says:

I don’t often comment on the [many] blog posts I read. But I was more than compelled to come and tell you how blown away I am by your work on this renovation! ‘Extensive’ is a word that does not come close to fitting the bill here. The fact that it turned out so amazingly stellar is only overshadowed by what you had to start with. I will just end with, “WOW.”
