BEFORE & AFTER Living Room + DIY Live Edge Coffee Table

Before & After, DIY PROJECT

I wish the screen had smell-o-vision so you all could understand how rancid this house was, it honestly was hard to be in there for more then a few minutes at a time. If you saw the episode you know that we found all sorts of bugs and dead rodents in the walls and ended up completely gutting the place. The good news is that now it’s fully insulated, completely safe with no question marks behind any walls. I LOVE how the living room tuned out, we were able to get rid of the drop ceilings (yes plural ceilings) and raise them to 11ft which makes the room seem so much bigger. Since there was no character to preserve in the house, I wanted to have a built in on the wall to add some interest. I worked with a local guy, Ray from Art of Wood, to create this focal wall, and am just so happy with how it turned out!

That before photo is giving me flashbacks, YUCK!  This table stole the show during the open house, and it was a DIY project (all the steps after the break). We found this piece of wood at Cream City Restoration and with a little sanding and staining, it looks absolutely beautiful.  I spotted these chairs in LA, at a store in Silverlake call Dean., and the owner was amazing to work with and he shipped them back to Wisconsin for me. I LOVE the worn in leather look!

I stuck up a conversation with, Mike a local fabricator, at a Maker Mart where he was selling his furniture, and we bonded over hair pin legs. Ever since then he has been my go-to guy for metal work, and he created this beautiful stair rail that nailed the modern industrial vibe!

My friend, Hemad from The Loom House, brought over these gorgeous rugs for staging. The runner was my favorite, it was PERFECT on these stairs. It was so cool how all our buddies contributed to making the vision for the house come together!

Removing a the wood paneling and lighting it up with HGTV HOME by Sherwin Williams-Pure White and replacing the carpet with Cali Bamboo Hardwood flooring-Vintage Moonlight instantly made the livingroom look twice as big! What do you all think of the transformation?!?

Steps for the DIY table after the break!

What you need:
Wooden slab
Hairpin legs
Wood Screws
Drill
Rags
Sander and sandpaper
Wood stain
Gloss Polyurethane Finish

What to do:
1. First turn over your piece of wood and drill the hairpin leg using wood screws.
2. Next sand down the top to remove all the grooves to reveal the flat, smooth wood top.
3. Next, wipe down your surface to remove all the sanding dust
4. I wanted a stain that would enhance the natural color of the wood, so went with a Natural stain finish to bring out all the character in the slab. Stir the stain thoroughly before applying it in the direction of the grain with a rag. Let it sit for 5-15 minutes for a rich, darker color. Use a clean cloth to remove the stain that has not been absorbed into the wood, while blending light and dark areas. Let dry for at least 8 hours
5. Once dry, brush on a gloss polyurethane finish, applied in thin coat in the direction of the wood grain. Let it dry for 2 hours and then sand with a fine sandpaper to ensure an even finish. Apply a second and third coat, and let dry for 3 hours. Done!

Amazing! Did you have to also sand down the curvy outer bark area as well? I presume it was also rough and had pieces of bark stickiny ouy everywhere. If so, how did you get into all the grooves & curves?

    1. Jenni says:

That part was left natural, And just covered with poly to keep it from chipping!
