One Material, Two DIYs | Cotton Rag Rug

DIY PROJECT, Home DIY

I’m back with another round of One Material, Two DIYs, and this time I am taking a Cotton rag rug and making it over in two ways: Moroccan style print and Dip Dyed Ombre. Cotton rag rugs are perfect for DIY projects, you can paint them or dye them, and they are easy to throw in the wash…beyond versatile.

I love the bold look of Moroccan rugs. I gathered inspiration from some of my favorite designs and mapped out a pattern on the rug using painter’s tape. With a few brush strokes of black paint, my rugwas done. I placed it in the entryway of the studio, which I found was the best way to greet my guests because it really makes a statement!

Next, I used one of my favorite techniques to add some color to my floor. With the help of some dye packets, I created a multicolored, ombre motif on the rug. This technique is wonderful because you can incorporate your entire color palette in this single piece to unite the space. I laid the rug in front of my gray couch, and it does an amazing job of complementing my wall art and neutral coffee table.

What you need:
Cotton Rag Rug
2 packets of Tulip Dip Dye
Bucket of water

What to do:
Fill a bucket with one gallon of hot water.
Pour the total contents of the dye packet into the water and stir until dissolved.
Roll rug, then submerge fabric into dye mix and let sit for 30 seconds.
Gradually remove fabric to achieve an ombre effect.
If you’re using two colors, duplicate this process on the opposite side of the rug.
Hang on a clothing line (outside or over a plastic sheet). Let dry, done
